Starter Box Battles: Mother of Monsters vs Children of December

Starter Box Battles is a series of battle reports where we try to showcase either the starter box of a game, or a game played using only two basic faction boxes. So, for a seasonally correct Starter Box Battle, Ali and I decided to break out some Malifaux, and have a good old fashion game of Mother Nature verses the December Queen- Lilith against Rasputina.

WIP Wednesday: Malifaux Gremlins, and still working on that Alien!

Hello out there all you holiday partiers!

Yes, it's the holidays over here at LXG, so we are not getting as much done as usual. We still wanted to drop a quick line to let you know what's in the works this week, though. We'd hate to start a weekly article, and miss week two! So here I am, Tuesday, prepping an article.

The Zombie of the Month- December 2014- "Guys, Girls, and Dogs" by Twilight Creations

Do you need a very large number of zombies very fast? Do you want to play the world's worst game of Spinespur's "Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid" scenario, but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to do it? Do you want to fill out your zombie ranks for a photo shoot, but already have enough nice front line models? Then here are the zombies for you.

From Box to Table: Counterblast Mekkus Core Set

34000 - Counterblast Adventure Battle Game Mekkus Faction Core SetOkay, so...why not just a regular unboxing article? To be perfectly honest, it's because GMort covers most of the same games we do, and his Unboxed series is just too good to try to follow. Seriously, go read them. On top of that, Johan also does an amazing job with unboxings on his blog as well. Instead, I wanted to take a slightly different track, and discuss models going literally from sprue to table ready. Today we're going to tackle the Mekkus faction from Bombshell Miniature's Counterblast game.

WIP Wednesday: Ta'an Arnts, Meka and Monkeys, and Railworkers

The incredibly talented and wonderful artist Meg Maples of Arcane Paintworks coined the phrase "WIP Wednesday" (as far as I know),  and I thought that was so wonderful that it needs to become a thing.  So, here's a few quick looks at our project tables at LXG Headquarters this week.

One More for the Cabinet! Berkeley, Zombie Hunter by Reaper Miniatures

We weren't heavily into Kickstarter yet when the first Reaper Bones Kickstarter hit (but you can bet we have everything coming to us when Bones II arrives). Nevertheless, we have since acquired some nice pieces from the first set. I just finished one of them, so here she is for you to take a look at: Berkeley, Zombie Hunter by Reaper Miniatures. Hey, even a zombie master like me paints a survivor once in a while!

It's Contest Time! Choose your Favorite Campaign!

Hello everyone!  The writers of LXG all got together last night, and because we can't come up with a convincing idea, we're turning it into a contest.  Help us choose what to play, and maybe win some models while you're doing it!

Malifaux Battle Report: Mei Feng vs. Perdita

I know it might seem that I never actually play.  Most of our battle reports involve 2CE and his various opponents.  Mainly that is a product of the club primairly playing in his house. but today was different, I, Belgarath97, got in a game against Merek, with an added bonus that we both played with new crews we both had interest in.  For me it was Mei Feng, I'm really interested in her as a master so I can have another Arcanist option to go with Colette.  Merek used Perdita, which would be a complement to his Hoffman crew.  We got Standard deployment, with the Reckoning Strategy, and Power Ritual, Breakthrough, Vendetta, Line In the Sand, and Protect Territory Schemes.  I chose Vendetta and Protect Territory, and chose one of my Rail Workers to kill his Hunter for Vendetta.  Merek chose Power Ritual, which he revealed, and Protect Territory.

Box Review: Masters of the Path Box Set

Greetings, fellow Malifaux fans!

When LXG hit Malifaux, we did it hard. Almost everyone in the club has two or three factions going , and there's plenty more we want. I think it's because they hit our weak spot- we love awesome models. And they have plenty. So, I guess we'd better get started with some model and faction reviews, and you can bet there are bunches of battle reports coming your way! Let's get started with my first box, the Masters of the Path box set.

Malifaux Battle Report: Yan Lo vs Rasputina, 65 Soul Stones!

So, as you can read in this article, Ali has finally finished her Yan Lo box, plus the extra models she really wanted to use thematically with it.  As a reward, she wanted to do something she never does and play a BIG GAME, using all her freshly painted pieces.  As it turns out, the only person with enough painted models to go up against a 65 soulstone force all with one theme was me.  So, we ditched the normal order of picking things, and settled right into going to town with Yan Lo vs. Rasputina!

Finding your Hobby Again: A little help from your friends

As B97 has been discussing, he's had a bit of a stallout in his hobby.  These things happen from time to time to all of us- life gets in the way due to work or family or money, and it's hard to get momentum on the thing that helps make the rest all easier to deal with.  That's one of the reasons your hobby buddies, your club, your crew, whatever you want to call it, are so important.  We stick together, are there for each other, and maybe even mock each other slightly.  Here's how you can help a buddy of yours that's in a stallout get his thrusters going again.

The Zombie of the Month- November 2014- Dumpster Diving at FRP

Well, it's now the holiday shopping season. Of course, we know this by the sales that are going on all over the place. So, in keeping with the theme of getting more stuff for less money, I thought I'd share with you one of the places I go to get some discounted zombie miniatures: FRP Games. Ok, so, there are some good things and some bad things about shopping the "Overstock Sale List" at FRP. I mean, sometimes there's a reason things are on clearance. So, sometimes a model is 50% off, but it comes in missing a limb. But only sometimes. And sometimes you get your stuff in 3-5 days, sometimes it's 3-5 weeks. On the other hand, clearance rack shopping is always fun, and sometimes you find some real gems. FRP clearances everything. Sure, some things on there may be obscure, but some will actually be for games you play, or useful things like dynamic bases, or be just downright beautiful. So, I'm here today to show you some of the finds I scored last time I went hunting in the Overstock section.

Holiday Savings- Your online discount shopping guide

Welcome to the Holiday Season! For most of us, that means eating too much, seeing family and old friends, and watching football. Those are for other blogs! We're going to look at the commercial benefits this holiday season can being to your Hobby!

Now, there's bound to be more added in, and I'm just going to keep updating this article as I find more, so be sure to check back regularly.  However,  here's the list of over a dozen I've uncovered,  in alphabetical order- and it even has a couple representatives on both sides of the pond!

Honey, I shrank my hobby!

So, if you've been looking around, you've noticed that there's a large movement in Wargaming these days away from the "standard" of 28mm (heroic) figures.  While some are getting larger and going into 32mm pieces, there's a growing hardcore support for smaller scales- 10mm and 15mm are becoming the rage.  Let's look at some of the reasons why.

Kickstarter broke the Internet!

Now that I have your attention... So, Kickstarter is breaking the internet, and destroying the wargaming industry by filling it with a whole bunch of undeliverable products and sketchy business practices. Or... is it?  Let's look at the situation objectively.

Fantasy gaming is dead? ...Not with Norsgard!

So my friends say I have a problem.  I love Kickstarters!  I search the site at least 3 times a week looking for new minis, games, terrain, you name it.  So when I stumbled on Norsgard I surprised to see a new fantasy game coming to market.  There had been a few others with varying degrees of success, and I wondered what could make this one stand out.  I was in for a bit of a ride...

Attack of the Unpainted Minis: A Dropzone Commander Battle Report. (700pts, UCM/Shaltari)

So, we generally have a rule against playing with unpainted models.  However, we've been so impressed with the Dropzone Commander models we just couldn't wait.  That, and Merek has been doing such a stellar job of getting stuff painted, that since he was over and I have a camera to test out, we figured it was time to make something happen!

Tabletop Props Kickstarter is Funded!

Tabletop Props did it! After two unsuccessful tries, their Covered Wagons Kickstarter is finally funded, meaning livestock-powered transportation devices are heading to tabletops near you soon! So, what's left in this Kickstarter?  A whole lot of upcoming stretch goals for other campsite and western themed pieces.

The Ion Age Announces Massive 15mm Terrain Expansion

The Ion Age is planning to make a huge hit into 15mm scifi wargaming terrain.  While their current hab dome line is really high quality, their new line is poised to become the most modelar terrain available in the 15mm genre.

Tabletop Props comes back to Kickstarter with a new, old project!

You gotta love someone who does it for the love of the hobby.  Someone who has an idea for a project and refuses to let it fail.  Tabletop Props comes full circle with their fourth Kickstarter being an attempted relaunch of their first two.  They have momentum, can they win the fight this time?

Finding your hobby again: Ugh! This is harder then I thought.

So I promised to be in a week, and it's been three.  It was a rough 3 weeks, but I've made a few discoveries in that time.  So sit back and enjoy reading about someone else's struggles to find his hobby again.  I think there are some universal truth's here.

Assault on Fortress Moon- PulpyRetro Scifi Boardgame with Gusto!

"Bad Wiring"So, we get a lot of requests to review Kickstarters. Honestly, probably enough to make a whole separate channel for them.  Most of them do not have miniatures, and therefore we never show them (because, that's kinda our thing... sometimes I wonder if people read the Blog before submitting). So, I was about halfway through one such email when I got to the sentence "It's a strategic tabletop wargame where retro scifi miniatures fight for control of the Moon!" And just like that, Assault on Fortress Moon has my credit card jumping out of my wallet.

Counterblast Unboxed! The Edo

Next up on the Counterblast unboxing list is the Edofleini. Or, as everyone is always going to call them, the Edo. Otherwise known as space squids. Because you can't have pulp sci-fi without space squids. These are going to to be a fantastic choice for people that want to do something a little off-the-wall with their paint schemes. I mean, accuracy isn't going to be an issue with space squids, right? You can do whatever you want!
But there are delightful decisions to be made even before you prime them, right from the moment you take them out of the box. So let's take a look, shall we?

Resurgence: Shattered Verse Returns in a big way

For those not in the 15mm scifi community, Shattered Verse was an internet phenom game created by Adam Isherwood in 2010.  Nearly five years later, Crushpop Productions is taking the work of Adam Isherwood and spinning it into a whole new direction with Shatteredverse: Resurgence- and that direction is taking off like a rocket.

Gamers doing Good Things: Movember Models

So it's important to remember that even though we might not have the funds available to buy all the soldiers we want, there's people worse off. One of the things I've always been impressed by and grateful for were gamers and gaming companies willing to help lead the charge for good causes.  Today, we're going to highlight two model producers making charity models for Movember this year.
