Chief Thunderbringer did not set out to create a tribe. She doesn't need minions. Hell, she doesn't even need backup. But her strength of conviction in favor of a simpler time, her courage, and her intense natural charisma seem to draw people to her like some old world guru. She speaks, and people listen. She walks, and people follow. Maybe they are drawn to her sense of self-reliance, to the independence that comes with freeing oneself from the over-advanced technology that caused all this mess. Or maybe they really believe that massive weapon she carries is magical. Regardless, when the boss charges at the enemy like a raging bull, they follow. (model: Helle Moller, Hell Dorado)
A bit of a weird sort, Clarice took the name Distant Thunder when she met Thunderbringer. She claims it's a reference to some old book, but no one knows what she's talking about, nor do they understand the big monstrosity of a weapon she carries. But they are sure an effective pair. Clarice used to be part of the Venus Outpost, but she saw the same old ways that she feels got us into this mess, so when Thunderbringer came and spoke of a return to the earth, she embraced it. She's still a bit of a city girl at heart. She doesn't much feel inclined to wear leather from kills or hunt with a bow- she still prefers her scavenged machine-made clothes and her high-powered rifle. But she seems to have a great love and loyalty for Thunderbringer and the tribe. Besides, her familiarity with the more urban ways makes her a great Representative for the Tribe, since she speaks both languages. (model: Kali, USX Modern Day Heroes, RAFM)
Nightfire
This war shaman uses a disturbing sense of versatility in battle to confound and defeat his enemies. Naturally both brutal and cunning, mutation has given him the power to Cloud the Minds of his enemies in such a way that their distance attacks are unlikely to harm him and any allies nearby. For some reason, when he is there, no one can get a solid lock on him or anyone standing near him. Sometimes he uses that to turn the exposed vantage point of an archer into a kind of one way mirror, so the archer can aim out from an open vantage point, but no one can aim in. Sometimes he uses it to cover his approaching charge, only to beat on an enemy mercilessly with his large staff. While other tribals still think it's appropriate to use technology that is at least several hundred years old, Nightfire, a fanatical purist, will not touch anything more modern than the earliest metal working skills can provide. Bone Dancer is the vengeful spirit of the Stormbringers. She sees the apocalypse as humanity's punishment for its crimes against nature, and of all of the tribe, she is, perhaps, the most angry about it. As such, her bitterness, and the natural sense of insanity that comes with living in the Wasteland, have convinced her that she is an agent of death, brought to the world to avenge the cries of the earth upon those who would harm it. She has very little tolerance for anyone who is not a tribal, for she believes all other humans are a blight upon the earth, and she will not rest until nature is avenged. Battering Ram Cleave
A jock and gamer before the apocalypse, Connor's life didn't change much when the world ended, except that now he was actually doing all the stuff he pretended to do in his MMOGs. And now, he can work out all day instead of wasting time at some crummy day job. When the tribe needs him to do chores, he does the heavy lifting. Suits him just fine. Stinger wasn't always the mighty warrior she is today. Before the world blew up she was a spoiled, rich, girly-girl, whose idea of a catastrophe was a bad hair day. But sometimes the end of the world changes a girl, and since then she's beefed up and traded in her shopping bags and purse for armor and a spear. She still has that natural, pasty skin tone, though. Not that anyone makes fun of her for it anymore. (Model: Unknown)
Little Rad Rat
There's a reason you don't see many kids in the wasteland these days. Most of them don't make it. They don't have the speed, endurance, or street smarts, so unless they have a protector strong enough to keep both of them alive, they sadly perish. But Little Rad Rat is a natural street urchin. Thunderbringer saw her making it on her own one day, and was impressed. But Rat is also smart enough to know that being part of a team has its advantages, so when Thunderbringer flashed her a little half smile, she tagged along and eventually came to be accepted as a full-fledged member of the tribe. She has yet to prove her skills on the battlefield, but she never needs rescuing either, and is very handy when getting through small spaces is a necessity. (Model- Reaper Bones)
What else would you call a giant spider? Fortunately, this one is on our side- if you're a Stormbringer. The tribals have this unnerving capacity to attract loyal animals from the wastes. The Stormbringers are no exception. They refer to them as "totems". You you get used to them wandering around the camp- eventually. (Model- Reaper Bones)
What's so great about this zombie? It's everything you want for your horror/post-apoc game, all rolled into one (but only because you are not actually 28mm scale yourself). What a creative Kaiju. It's a big mutant zombie landshark. You heard me right. It has four legs, none of which, obviously, belong on a shark. It has a mouth big enough to swallow a 28mm figure whole- as an appetizer. No, seriously, I've stuck one in its mouth, it totally fits. And you're kinda glad to chalk up its many hideous wounds to the decay of a zombie plague, because your only other alternative is to
acknowledge that there is something ELSE out there big enough to do his kind of damage to this monstrosity.
Also, let me say that, despite the deliberate mutilation of shark anatomy, they did a really good job with the anatomy they did do. I'm not a shark expert, but the fins look very organic and seem to taper in the right places. I don't know what it's front legs are the legs of, but whatever it is definitely has legs just like that. I can tell. And yes, it has the appropriate multiple rows of teeth that are the shark's hallmark. Overall, a really magnificent sculpt for a weird beastie.
So, what is one to do with a mutant zombie landshark? Well, since it's post-apoc month, I think that's obvious- use it as a vicious snakehead for This is Not a Test!!! Yeah, you're glad there's only one of them. The model didn't come with a base, but I assure you, it's going on a 50.

The Basics:

Scale- The scale is officially 32mm, but I guess it's hard to scale a mutant zombie Landshark. For the record, there was also a 75mm scale version available, but we went with the game scale, of course.

Genre- Uh, terrestrial? That is to say, it may require you to be playing on a planet. Then again, maybe not. Maybe it can survive in space, too.

Material- Resin, so transport him carefully. There's a lot of teeth and claws to break off. It seems to be a fairly strong resin, because I have not had a problem with it thus far. It doesn't seem very brittle.

Parts 'n' Bits- none, unless you ignore the warning above ::wince::

Assembly- Ah, here's where we get a little tricky. See, that mouth goes very deep- good luck getting your paintbrush in there at the right angle to paint it after it's assembled. I HIGHLY recommend you do what we did. Prime the inside, paint the inside, assemble it, stuff it with gauze or something, then prime and paint the outside. The fit is not perfect- you may need to do a little cleaning and puttying to get the seams right, but you'll hardly notice when done- it's already highly mutated, after all.

Base- If you get the full kit, it comes with one, but ours did not. That's why it is not pictured on one. I assure you, he will hereafter be going on a 50.
I spent a lot of time on it, and I'm still looking at it going "Oh, I could have done this there." But it will even still look good if you don't get too detailed with it. Whatever you choose to do, it will still be a conversation piece.
Remember, that 1 doesn't mean I think that's an unfair price, just that you can't build a horde thatta way. To be fair, I really don't want to see more than one of those at a time. It takes the specialness out of it- and scares the crap out of me.
No kidding, there's not even anybody selling one on Ebay. There were 73 backers, and it looks like they are all keeping the one they've got. But they just shipped out the Kickstarter ones, so I'm sure they'll be putting this beauty up on their website soon.

Pros- While there are a lot of interesting and large zombies on the market, there are very few real kaiju zombies. And yet, this size is still very usable on the field, rather than being relegated forever to the gribbly shelf. It really hits the sweet spot of big, scary guy and "Yeah, I can find an excuse to put that on the table."

Cons- None really, unless you count that you can't get it now, now now now. Or if you don't need any really unique zombies. But then again, if you don't, you're probably not still reading my column, are you?
I know, you thought my last post was the Grand Finale. But this is the GRAND Grand Finale. It turns out, both Second Class Elitist and myself had off yesterday...

Let's back up a couple days, to Thursday. Perusing the "This is Not a Test" rulebook, 2CE was taking note of how many wonderful living hazards there are in the game. You have already met my rad rats. They were the first ones we got, because they are official TNT models, and I had really liked them from day one. But there are over a dozen living hazards in TNT, so into the Bones tote we dove, looking for things we could use to represent all of them, as well as trying to clear out the Bones tote to make way for new Bones- after all, this stuff was all form Bones II, and our stuff from Bones III is still coming- we did NOT want that to turn into two Bones totes. The Mountain of Metal challenge may be almost over, but it's spirit lives on.
It also occurred to me that we had so much old metal Malifaux and other good stuff just sitting in our backlogs, there just had to be something good in there. So into those totes we dove as well, and had a field day picking some interesting representations for radiated critters. By the time we were done, we had a big ol' blister pack filled with models we wanted to use as "terrain". Then, when we met up Saturday, I had an epiphany. "You know," I said, "Most of these could really be done well enough with a one or two color basecoat and a wash..." So we set about trying to empty it again. We got really close!!!

So here they are. We still have a few that need more complex assembly or paint jobs that are not represented here, and a few more that we know are things we have on order. But most of the living hazards are here: Giant Fire Ants, Giant Spiders, Trogs, Toxic Plague Carriers, Bears, Great Cats, Giant Ticks, Toxic Slimes, and a couple more that we finished after we did the photo shoot, because we just couldn't stop!

So consider this our conclusion to the Post-Octopalypse challenge. 2CE did up 17 models yesterday, and I completed 12, bringing the club total for the month of November, and the Post-Octopalypse, to a whopping 50. (And, of course, the way we count points, the number was even higher for our painting board.) As for the Mountain of Metal Challenge, not only did we actually remove models from the "To-Do" model count and add them to the terrain count, but we figured this last painting bash covers any miscellaneous things we might have grabbed along the way. Personally, I eventually found it very hard to keep track of that challenge. Six months is a long time, and since we buy most things via Kickstarters, it was really confusing. It's hard to keep track of things that aren't in your possession. I'm pretty sure my model count went down. I know my "Done" count went up, anyway. And, truth be told, the next 4 months are my most productive of the year- the time of year when all my other hobbies are on hiatus, and I get to chill out and do little other than paint during my weekends and evenings after my day job. So stay tuned for even more painting shenanigans! I'm pretty sure December's theme is going to be "finish shit you started." ::lol::
After all, what better way to celebrate the holidays in the Wasteland than with a Tribals vs. Settlers battle report?

What? What are settlers? Well, they're an upcoming warband we're helping to playtest. Don't worry, I won't give away much in the way of their special rules, although you might find some of the model names interesting. So, to start in, here's my warband.

Pine Lodge Settlement:

---"The Manager" (Settlement Leader. Has the Scavenger, Resourceful, and Haggler skills. Armed with an Assault Rifle with Bayonet.)

---Lucky (Mysterious Stranger. Has the Hard as Nails and Unfazed skills. Armed with Mesh Armor, a Light Weapon, a Plasma Pistol, and a Shiny Object.)

---Sheriff Jones (Sheriff. Armed with a Shotgun and Light Weapon.)

---The Preacher (Missionary. Armed with an Assault Rifle with Bayonet and Mesh Armor.)

---Johnny McHenry (Militia. Armed with an Assault Rifle and Light Weapon.)

---Dr. Kilpatience (Citizen Medic. Armed with a Pistol, Mesh Armor, and a Light Weapon.)

---Dr. Rory Lakes (Citizen Medic. Armed with a Pistol, Mesh Armor, and a Light Weapon.)

My plan was to bring seven models because the math rounds most favorably at that point. The wealth of assault rifles is because we've found them to be very successful at clearing out undesirables, particularly because of the Burst rule. Now, this force isn't terribly optimized verses Tribals (armor is all anti-ranged instead of anti-melee), however as they were based for the campaign and not the game, that's reasonable. Also, Lucky as the Mysterious Stranger isn't terribly optimized with the plasma pistol... but I just love the model, and was excited to be able to use her in a second game.

Ali's plan from inception was to beef her Tribals out with as many pets as she could manage, so her force is geared towards herding from the start.

The Stormbringers:

---Chief Thunderstrike (War Leader. Has the Brute, Spring Heeled, and Motivator skills. Armed with Scrap Armor, a Light Weapon, and a Blast Hammer.)

---Distant Thunder (representative. Has the Ranger and Haggler skills. Armed with a Sniper Rifle with Large Caliber upgrade and a BFF)

---Nightfire (Lesser Shaman. Has the Psyker and Brute Skills. Psychic Mutation is Cloud Mind. Armed with a Heavy Weapon.)

---Bonedancer (Tribal Warrior. Has the Rag tag special rule. Armed with a Light Weapon, Pistol, and Scrap Armor)

---Battering Ram Cleave (Tribal Warrior. Has the Rag tag special rule. Armed with a Heavy Weapon and Scrap Armor)

---Stinger of the Rad Wasp (Tribal Warrior. Has the Rag tag special rule. Armed with a Spear and Riot Armor)

---Little Rad Rat (Tribal. Has the Rag tag special rule. Armed with a bow, two Light Weapons, and Scrap Armor)

---Fangs (Warbeast. Has the Brave skill and Natural Weapons)

Our scenario rolled out to be Cold Turkey...er, I meant Vengeance... which only added to the feel we were going for. For Encounters we rolled Creatures of the Waste, and then rolled Trouble! In this case, the Trouble was four wastewolves. I deployed heavily to one side, hoping that either I would have grouped firepower near them, or they'd be on the other side and decide to go for gamier meat first. As luck would have it, the wolves went to the other side.

Turn one begins with me starting to move models up to combat ready positions- specifically, the concrete wall and collection of heavy vehicles in front of me. Sheriff Jones is in position and in heavy cover, when Distant Thunder gets him in her crosshairs, and puts one .50 cal round in the ten ring. Sheriff Jones goes down on the spot. Both sides start jockeying their advances. Dr. Kilpatience begins trucking over to Sheriff Jone's body to see if he's really dead or only mostly dead. The Tribals try to keep to the massive cover blinds as much as possible, which means a lot of spreading out. Fangs starts sprinting up the field with his massive 7" movement speed. Nightfire uses Cloud Mind to make about half of the tribals in heavy cover, just in case. One wastewolf is close enough to charge Stinger, but the armor does it's job. The rest of the wolves circle in, making it feel like a three player game.

Bonedancer charges a wastewolf and cuts it to ribbons. Little Rad Rat climbs up the ladder to the top of the bus to take a pot shot as the Manager, and misses. Dr. Kilpatience tries to revive the Sheriff, but doesn't. Distant Thunder tries to pop a shell into Dr. Kilpatience, but doesn't manage that either. Fangs creeps up under cover. The Preacher steps out to try to blast him full of holes, but misses. The Manager burns down a wastewolf. Stinger and the wastewolf exchange misses. The rest of the Tribals begin moving up into positions- there's a lot of table to cover when your opponent has multiple ARs.

I'm desperately trying to force the Tribals to keep their heads down and slow their approach, while being forced to keep my head down because of the sniper. The Preacher lays waste to a knee-high spider. Stinger finishes off the wastewolf that was threatening to come up under the Tribals. Little Rad Rat takes aim at the Manager once more, and misses. Johnny McHenry takes a shot at the advancing Chief Thunderstrike, but misses. Unfortunately for him, Distant Thunder has no such problems, and plants a .50 caliber lead seed in his skullpot. Fortunately for Johnny, Dr. Rory Lakes is able to get him back up again. The Manager and Lucky put tokens on the last Wastewolf, and it's just too many shots from too many high firepower weapons. Dr. Kilpatience gets Sheriff Jones back on his feet and into the fight. Little Rad Rat aims and fires at the Manager, but comes up short.

Not willing to walk past him just in case it wasn't enough, Chief Thunderstrike charges Jones and flattens him with the Blast Hammer. Battering Ram Cleave charges up and kills McHenry again. Lucky returns the favor and puts a pair of plasma blasts into Battering Ram Cleave from point blank range (Editor's note: make little green glowing pile of goo tokens.) The Preacher gets Chief Thunderstrike in his sights... and jams. Dr. Rory Lakes maneuvers to try to rescue the Sheriff again, and Distant Thunder punches one through his chest instead. Dr. Kilpatience tries to revive Dr. Lakes, but no dice. Little Rad Rat takes another shot at the Manager, and you guess it- misses.

Chief Thunderstrike crushes the Preacher, which forces a morale test. EVERYONE FAILS, meaning the all fall back five inches. On my activations, I don't have clean lines to anyone.

Turn Six is another round of consolidation for the Tribals, coming in hard and fast. I've got my remaining models (The Manager, Dr. Kilpatience, and Lucky) consolidated under/near the billboard. Tribals keep pouring in. Lucky takes aim at Bonedancer and plasmas her into oblivion.

Turn Seven there's no more room to run. Chief Thunderstrike scores a "squish" result on Dr. Kilpatience, and Stinger vaults in taking out Lucky. Little Rad Rat gets a line on The Manager and... misses.

Turn Eight: At this point everything is resolved aside from if it's a table wipe or not. And, not for nothing, but that's pretty important in this one: I really don't want to risk loosing a leader so early, as there's no possible way I'll have enough to replace him. The Manager levels a wound into Chief Thunderstrike, but isn't able to finish her off. Thunderstrike wiffs against the wily Manager. Stinger of the Rad Wasp charges in and takes a stab, but the Manager blocks it away. Nightfire takes a swing, but can't connect. The last possibility is Little Rad Rat who takes aim an.... misses again. Poor, poor Little Rad Rat. The Manager escapes!

Post Game Results for Pine Lodge: So, everyone but The Manager needed to check for possible injury. Lucky catches a lucky break, and gains an extra XP. Sheriff Jones gets captured by the Tribals, and <fill in remainder>. The Preacher and McHenry suffer close calls from the encounter. Dr. Kilpatience doesn't survive the encounter (sad trombones). Dr. Lakes is seriously wounded, and now has Vengeance against the Stormbringers.

Experience Totals:

The Manager +5 (80)
Lucky +5 (51)
Sheriff Jones +2 (23)
Preacher +3 (24)
McHenry +2 (2)
Dr. Lakes +2 (23)
Not enough for an advance yet, but it's only one game, so that's fine.

The Manager's Resourcefulness nets an extra 4 script, and his Scavenger means he'll have no upkeep of his own later (effectively netting the settlers 3 more). Lucky, Dr. Lakes, the Preacher, and McHenry head out to scavenge in the wasteland. Lucky, true to her name, finds a minigun laying about in an old roboturret (Queen of Hearts). Dr. Lakes gathers 27 script, the Preacher only scrounges 6 script, and McHenry brings in another 24 script. That brings the total to 61 script and a minigun. Ransoming back Sheriff Jones leaves me with 31. Upkeep comes in at 10 (2 each for Lucky, Jones, the Preacher, and Dr. Lakes, 1 for the plasma pistol, one for McHenry), knocking me down to 21. With that mini-gun in the stores, I'm really interested in picking up a Gunsmith to use it, which means not replacing the fallen Doctor just yet even if I had the script, which I don't. I do need to replace Sheriff Jones' weaponry, and the success of Distant Thunder convinced me some long-range punch is needed. The Sniper Rifle normally costs 20, and the Large Caliber upgrade would add 5. The Manager successfully haggles that down by 9, making the cost 16 script. 5 BS left going into next round.

Post Game Results for The Stormbringers Not a lot of injury checks for the Storm Bringers, but I made them count. Bondancer was outright killed. Battering Ram Cleave got pretty Banged Up, and Fangs got mugged....mugged...because somebody shook down a giant spider for cash...or something. Good news for Ali is that a Mugging result doesn't injure the model, just steals all their gear, and warbeasts don't have any.

Experience Totals:

Chief Thunderstrike +7 (82)

Distant Thunder +5 (51)

Nightfire +2 (48)

Battering Ram Cleave +3 (3)

Stinger of the Rad Wasp +3 (3)

Little Rad Rat +2 (2)

Fangs +2 (2)
Also not enough for any advances, but close.

Distant Thunder finds a locked box with 35 script, Nightfire finds 18 script, Stinger finds 18, and Little Rad Rat finds 6. Whomp whomp. Total of 73 Plus the 30 for ransom is 103. Ali also keeps the sheriff's Shotgun and light weapon.

Upkeep is Chief Thunderstrike (3+1 for relic), Distant Thunder (2+1 for relic), Nightfire (2) Battering Ram Cleave (1), Stinger (1), LRR (1), and Fangs (1). 13 upkeep. 90 remaining. Ali decides that money in the bank isn't as useful to her as money shooting and stabbing and looting, so she goes on a hiring spree. She picks up another Tribal and gives her the shotgun and light weapon recently acquired, a Tribal with a crossbow (mostly because she had a model she really wanted to field), and another warbeast. She rolls for Relics and can find anything she wants, so sends Distant Thunder to buy a Thunder Gun, saving 6 BS because of DT's Haggler skill. With 4 script left, she opts to buy Battering Ram Cleave a case of Berserker Brew to offset the Banged Up penalty, leaving her a whopping 1 barter script remaining.

And there we go! Plenty of fun, plenty of new models coming in, and looking forward to seeing where the Campaign spreads to.

First I'd like to introduce you to the rest of the Stormbringers. I am still hoping to give them all war paint, but they are done as far as anyone can tell (or if I start doing war paint and don't like it). The bone- clad chick on the left is from Another World Miniatures, and the models actual name is Maia. Really cool model, with just a hint of necromancy in it, so you know I had to fit her in there somewhere. And Bone accessories and armor is not unheard of in tribal North America. So, even though she's just a rank and file girl, I wanted to give her a personality, so I put her in all off-white, like a little post-apoc anti goth.
The guy on the right will be serving as my Psyker. He's another Bones model. I already rolled for his psychic mutation, and it's a defensive one- he can create a 3" radius of heavy cover, which should be pretty useful. Oh, yeah, and MY Psyker uses a massive 2-handed staff for melee combat. And I think that's a flaming heart in his other hand ::lol:: Don't ask.
And then there's my boss. A truly awesome model, this gal is Helle Moller from Hell Dorado. I have a couple models from that line that are filling in in different games. There are some truly awesome minis in that line. If you've never looked at them, you should. I've heard mixed reviews about the game, but I love a lot of the figures. Anyways, check out that big, scary bar mace. Yeah, that thing became an artifact when I started her- she is my war chief, after all. Her pose is great- she looks like one tough broad; she looks like she means it. She's confident and strong. I'm delighted to have her leading my team. And, yeah, you got me, there's a bit of influence from Tina Turner's character from Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome in there. That just makes her perfect- and did I mention frickin' awesome?

...And then there's the rats. One of the many delightful living terrain hazards you can roll to add to your game scenariosthi. Yeah, there's a bunch of those in the game- ridiculously cool. Anyways, these are the actual rad rats from World's End Publishing. There are 5 sculpts (you can, in fact, buy them in a pack of 5, or a swarm of 10), and they are just darling. If you like that sort of thing. Which I do. Five unique sculpts, with 5 unique mutations- multiple limbs, back spikes, there's a little something for everybody. Everybody who likes mutant rats, anyway. Yeah, you could just get any old rats to play the game, but don't you want the one with six legs? I know I do.
Well, there you have it. This most likely concludes my Post-Octopalypse contributions, as there are only 3 days left in the month, and I have to go cook up a zombie of the month for you all. I'm sorry, should I not have mentioned "cook" and "mutant rats" in the same article? Too bad- this is the Apocalypse. More legs just means more meat, right? ;)

So, this first set here are all ones I snagged from our Reaper Bones tote, so I don't really know their names exactly, but you can always look through Reaper Bones to find them- there's only a couple hundred to check through ::lol:: No set of primitives would be complete, of course, without the Conan lookalike wearing nothing but a loin cloth. This guy adds a pretty badass helmet to protect his important parts, which is so obviously his brain ::sarcasm::. And, of course, a good battle ax is so much more impressive than a simple sword. Frankly, it's probably a more useful tool to boot. I think I would rather have an ax during an apocalypse than a sword. But now I'm getting too technical. It was really about going through the mountain of metal and going "Gee, what can I pull out that will reasonably fit with my theme?" And this guy definitely fits.
Now, when I was growing up, the early Mad Max movies were big, so for me, a post-apoc set of characters is also not complete without a kid. Ok, sure, this isn't really a kid- she seems to have a rather developed chest for her height, but that's only because the figure itself was actually not supposed to be human. She's supposed to be some kind of halfling or something. but she has the small frame and large head of a child. I guess, with how easy Bones is to carve, I could have flattened the chest a little, but her torso is already so tiny, and I think you still get the idea. Anyway, she is really well equipped for a post-apoc tribal, and I just had to have her in there.
Oh, yeah, and the third one is a big, scary spider. So begins the adding of rad-totems to my force, 'cause I am so maximizing the pets. And, you know, spiders are scary.

The second set are a fun pair of metal ladies. The one on your left is Kali, from RAFM's USX: Modern Day Heroes. Yeah, ok, that's a big gun for a Tribal, but you use what you can find, and she's a Tribal Representative, so she's allowed to have some bigger stuff.
Unfortunately, I have no idea who the second girl is. Stupid me threw out her package prematurely, and no one can remember. I thought she was an "Amazon with Spear," but that search did not turn up any matches, so I might be wrong, and without remembering the maker, odds of finding her name are slim, so if anyone remembers, please let me know. But she's cool, and I decided to go a counter-intuitive direction with her coloring, and made her the pasty-white blonde chick of the bunch, where most of my tribals are fairly well tanned. I kinda feel like she was some spoiled rich girl before the apocalypse, and now she's tied up her long blonde hair in war ponytails and "gone native", so to speak. Honestly, I'm not even sure I know what that expression means, but in TNT, it means that you became a Tribal ::lol::, because that's exactly the fluff of the faction.
So, there you have it, my completed models for this week. I think that brings my total for the Post-Octopalypse to 5, and our club total to 7. Since I still have a lot of models half done, and have some nice, simple rats to do, I'm really hoping to blow that number out of the water next week, After all, this is America, and I get a day off this week! Nah, I don't need to visit or anything. I can paint ::lol::

Until next time, mortals!
Ok, I've never tried writing a battle report before, but I figured I'd try it, since the game was only 300 points and it made a good story. So here goes- let me know what you think!

It's week two, and we're still at 300 points, but today, instead of kill'em all, we can actually only score points with secondary objective cards. I was really frustrated with the uselessness of the Coils last time (the 3 of them only killed 1 model total, and didn't move far, while Michael flew across the field and took out the other 4), so I decided to go the other way, and just bring 2 archangels, hoping that wouldn't bite me in the arse for objective running. TOG, who also likes to play big guys, brought only 4 models- 3 mercs and one sidekick to a merc. That's 6 models in all for the whole game ::lol::

Round One: Yeah, yeah, yeah, everybody moves, and you can't collect objective points anyway. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, my approach is to start moving my guys to where they can obtain a point for my first objective in Round 2: Advance: Have everybody in No Man's Land at the end of the turn. Not too hard since I only have 2 guys. I am assuming my esteemed opponent is doing the same- moving towards objectives.

Round Two: TOG charges right in with Phadros, slashing at Gabriel from two inches away, because he figures (quite correctly) that leaving that jerk on the field any longer than necessary is a bad idea. He does one point of damage out of three. Gabriel retaliates by smacking him with the Angelic Choir, both stunning him and knocking him prone, because Gabriel's a punk.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, Michael can't aim for Lucky, who is just out of range, so he shoots at Maximo, hitting Lucky anyway since it's a blast template, and doing 1 point. Ironically he does not kill the 1 health point sidekick, who makes both his armor saves, but now they are both on fire, which always becomes important later.
Lucky retaliates by hitting Michael and blinding him, like she does. Yeah, that whopping 4 point deficit to your AS is definitely annoying.
Blade runs over to join in on tag-teaming Gabriel, sliding in at the edge of an objective marker hoping to score his team some points, but does not have enough actions left to hurt the big punk.

Round 3: Phadros wastes so much energy getting back on his feet that he can't finish off Gabriel (because Gabriel's a punk). Rather than let Blades also get a shot off on him, Gabriel smacks him point blank with a face-full of Angelic Choir, which sounds bad enough, but really it was Blades' unfortunate crit-failing of his armor save that did him in. He apparently leaned into it, and took both his hit points at once, having had no chance at all to show off. Sucks to be you, Blades. Michael, who has always been the slugger of the Heavenly Host, decides that he'd better come to Gabriel's aid, vaulting in at a 90 degree angle to Gabriel so Gabriel can still use the Angelic Choir if he needs to. Unfortunately, Michael is not able to finish off the massive Phadros, which is only a problem because I have won initiative maybe 5 times in my entire life. What were the other two busy doing this round? Well, Lucky, who remembered that she was on fire, spent the round putting herself out so she wouldn't burn to death, while Maximo, who forgot he was on fire, tried to attack Michael and merely succeeded in immolating himself. (Fire, bad!)

Round 4: TOG wins initiative (big surprise) and activates Phadros (big surprise) who finishes off Gabriel (big surprise), who explodes, like he does. The blast did one point of damage to both Michael (oops, I guess that 90 degree angle wasn’t the right pick) and Phadros, who alas only had one left… because Gabriel's a punk.

So now it's my activation, and I have one guy left- so does TOG, but mine is bigger- and can get within melee range. What was the lesson of week one, kiddies? Don't get into melee with Michael, especially if you're a ranged specialist. Michael vaults in on Lucky, charging her with his massive bonuses. She gets a free melee attack on him and tries to plunk him with the butt of her pistol, but it's like a kid with a pinata stick beating on a mech. He finishes her off with his usual brutality.

Mind you, this week was all about those objective cards, and at this point he had 3 cards to my one, but I got lucky with pulls, and ended up with 4, since you keep playing it out through round 8.

So there was the fight, but the really brutal part was the after-game campaign rolls. Gabriel walks away without a scratch, while the guy that killed him (subsequently getting himself blown up in the process) rolls a crit-fail and is out for 3 games. Because Gabriel's a punk. To make matters worse, Lucky and Blades roll just as badly. Ouch. The biggest problem with that is TOG's entire force is based on having 8 or 9 big mercenaries, and he's already down 3 for the next 3 games. At this rate, he may very well end up with a game in which he cannot fill his points allotment, which is generally not good for one's campaign score.

So, let's recap. Week one, the moral of the story is: Don't Melee with Michael. Week Two, the moral of the story is: Gabriel's a punk. Honestly, TOG really likes that about Gabriel. He's thinking about making a Gabriel and the Banes crew- the version I resisted, 'cause they're a bunch of punks.

So here it is, real quick- Boom!

Ok, as you can see, a lot of my tribals have moved out of the WIP area and will be coming to you soon for this week's DONE article. Woohoo! They have, however, gotten a little farther, and been joined by one or two new buddies, including the first of what will be many rad rats! You know me and my rats- I volunteered to paint all of them. Not sure if that counts as painting models or terrain, but I can't wait to use them!

Well, there you have it. Second Class Elitist will be forwarding the $50 prize to the Army Emergency Relief Fund just not in time for Veteran's Day, as soon as all of us losers pay into the kitty. Thank you very much to everyone who voted. This was really grand fun, and for a bunch of good causes. I'm going to have to talk the club into doing this again. Maybe next time we can get more people involved and really make it interesting.

I just stole Second Class Elitist's week one title and changed the cliche reference. But at least it gives a degree of consistency.

That's about where the commonality ends, though. No mutants here. This week, you have two very different but both incredibly awesome female apocalypse survivors, with their genetic stability apparently very much intact.

First up, we have our official World's End Publishing model, the mascot of "This is Not a Test", our babe, Gas Mask Girl. She's been doin' this for a while. She knows not to walk through this area without her mask on. She knows to carry a spare gun, even if it's in pieces, along with some other useful things in her back sling. She knows how to use a machete- how can you not respect this girl? It's a beautiful model- great figure, great pose, great outfit, great addition to any of a variety of post-apocalyptic teams. The model was not made for a specific faction, either- you really could fit her into a variety of groups. I, personally, had a little bit of trouble painting the eyes- I wanted to actually paint them , but I could not get them even. There might be something about the sculpt that throws you off, so just be wary of that when painting her. Other than that, my color scheme was a little bit different than the official, for a color scheme that would go a tiny bit better with my tribals (and because I never use an official color scheme- we know this by now, right?

For my other finished piece this week, as promised, I bring you the Ganger Badass from Bad Roll Games' "Punkapocalyptic". You will see more of those when we get the big order in, but we didn't want to make you wait, and I knew I'd want two of her anyway. For the first variation, I armed her with her crossbow, to make her fit better with my tribals, but I want another one eventually to equip her with the rifle instead, which is a gorgeous, streamlined look. In fact, the entire model is remarkably streamlined, for metal. It looks like the days of only being able to make chunky metal models is officially over. Look at those legs! Slender and well sculpted. I mean, sure, she looks like some post-apocalyptic cover girl, with the long torso, slender model look, but let's face it, in the apocalypse, thin is in. And it's well sculpted, with a greater than usual sense of realism, including the proportions. So, yeah, definitely check out these guys as well.

So, unless 2CE snuck in a post of his own while I was writing this, I believe that brings our Post-Octopalypse total to 5 for the club for the first 2 weeks. See you Wednesday for more new works in progress! Yeah, I know, I have like 20 started and only 2 finished. Like I said, I'm mostly trying to play without gray soldier syndrome, and I still have to get you guys some zombie lovin' before the end of the month. Somebody else is bound to get finished.Ali Alcatrazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16821374518174842595noreply@blogger.com115tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349132636052911887.post-28611011800060435082015-11-11T23:16:00.000-05:002015-11-11T23:19:35.580-05:00Post-Octopalypse week 2 WIP! It's TNT time!
All right, I promised you some Tribal action this week, and here they are! I didn't get as far a playing a game with them last night, but they are ready! There are a couple late editions that are not as far as the rest, and there are a few more I am hoping to start in case of casualties, but there will be no gray primitives on this field. Or, white, I guess, since a lot of them are Bones models. Don't worry; you'll get a better introduction when they are all done.

I know that "Tribal" can mean a lot of different things, but when I was growing up on the East Coast of the US, that always meant Native American (actually, at the time, it meant American Indian, but, you know, PC changes...) Anyways, I really wanted to at least allude to a Native American style. So, I stuck mainly with models that could be reasonably wearing leather or bone. Yes, it's post-apoc, and they are wearing whatever they can find, but more or less that was the plan. I looked up naturally occurring dyes in the US, and a large percentage of them are reds, oranges, and yellows, so I used a lot of those, and variations of browns for different leathers. And, naturally, the metals are mostly silver and copper, because you always see them in Native American jewelry (modern, at least). And, of course, a pinch of turquoise.

So, this is as far as I've gotten for now. Nobody's finished, but there's a lot of base coat going on. No, you know nobody's finished, because there's no war paint. Of course I'm doing war paint. I mean, come on. War paint.

More next week!

So, here they are, coming at you live and in person in ARMAGEDDONSCOPE!

So, there's a lot of reasons why I wanted to do Mutants for our TNT campaign. The first reason being I was pretty sure I could compile a really nice ragtag of models out of things just lying around in the bottom of my mountain of metal. You know, those "Isle of Misfit Models" pieces that either look really good, or are on a really massive sale, but you can't ever figure out how to work them into a force? Well, Mutants get it done!

From Day One, there was no question about who my leader was gonna be. He was gonna be the biggest, baddest, meanest model I could field.... and it turned out it was this guy. I don't remember who the manufacturer was (Fenryll maybe?), but I got him on the cheap because something had smashed the blister, and even for an Orc (which he was originally) he face was smashed and deformed. I had tried three or four times to rescultp something, but it never had the right look. But as a ten foot tall post apoc mutant? Sure, give him a post-apoc mask a la Lord Humungus, and we're in business.

Just walk away. Leave the dice, and just walk away.

Next up to bat was an Abomination. What can I say, I like'em big. Actually, I like'em with more than one wound, and the "Big" mutation does that. Again, I don't remember which line this guy is from (Reaper possibly?) but his "stitched together" construct nature made an easy translation to "mutant with lost of scars." He's big, he's ugly, and paired with Lord Mutungus that's four wounds of armored close combat nastiness coming at my opponents hard and fast.

And last, but by no means least, is my first completed actual World's End model I picked up the Husk to actually use as a psyker. Sure, the model looks like a piece of human meat jerky... but really, are you sure that's not appropriate for a mutant? The nice thing is he can serve dual purpose as an actual Husk should anyone in the campaign need one in a game. Psykers have some really nice advantages that you can't get any other way in the game, so even though you can't choose which psychic ability you start with, I'm confident it will be a beneficial one.

So, there you have it, three uglies ready to rock and roll in some TNT action soon. Hopefully even this week! Second Class Elitisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15070154509210557758noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349132636052911887.post-57801617229313438032015-11-04T23:38:00.001-05:002015-11-04T23:38:06.535-05:00Ali's Post-Octopalyse week 1 WIP Wednesday! Ok, so, I figured WIP Wednesday was a good way to show off my post-Octopalypse work. Especially considering I expect to start a lot more than I finish this month. Thing is, we are planning to play both Dark Age and This is Not a Test here in the old headquarters, and I have bupkis for both. And if there's one thing Second Class Elitist hates, it's gray soldier syndrome. And I'm not crazy about it myself. That being said, I'm not exactly playing high equipment lists in either game, so I need a LOT of models for both.

I'm not that fast. As you saw last month, I can finish one or two models a week, tops, if I do them start to finish. It doesn't matter how many models I need. That's my pace. Period. So, I need an alternate plan to avoid playing with unpainted models.

So here's my plan. I'm going to start by getting everybody table ready. Good old fashioned "basecoated in 3 colors, details exempt, base addressed" style. Across the board, all 2-3 dozen I need to get through a campaign-length ordeal. Then I'll go back in and build them up as I get a chance.

I was really hoping to show you both my starter squad for Dark Age and my initial force for TNT, but that was not to be. The tardiness begins already. At any rate, I at least got started on Dark Age. I'm happy with the Coils for now, but I'm going to do a lot more guilding on Michael this weekend before I feel he's ready enough to move on. By the way, yes, that ruddy brown is the primer- we were short on the usual black and white, and I thought the reddish brown would go well with, well, frankly, any post-apoc. I'll explain my color scheme when I get a little further along.

So there it is. Next week- the beginning of Tribals, promise!

Hello everyone! Since I was a little late to the party for Zomtober, I thought I'd try my hand at coming up with something new for us to aim for in the month of November....

The Post-Octopalypse!

So, the rules for the Post-Octopalypse will be very familiar, as I'm straight up stealing the rules from Zomtober. (Hey, is the post-Octopalypse, you have to scavenge to survive, man!) To take part you just need to paint one "potentially post-apocalyptic" model each week, in any scale you like, posting it to your blog by the Sunday (we use Sunday's as the end of each Post-Octopalypse week). So that means one or more minis each week on or before the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of November 2015. Since this is late notice, anyone who doesn't get someone in the first week can get a pass. After all, it takes a while to get those vault doors open. To add to the feel, each blog in the list will be marked as either a SURVIVOR! if they make all four (three really) weeks model completions, or a VICTIM! if they miss one.

Anyone commenting on this post will get added to the blog list below (and feel free to do something similar on your own blogs- as the word spreads, more and more bloggers can be involved!). Also, as a bonus, if anyone is a member of the #WIPWednesday movement, please feel free to post a "potentially post-apocalyptic" model for both #WIPWednesday and finish him for Sunday (or the next Sunday).

What constitutes a "potentially post-apocalyptic" model, you ask? Well, where "zombie" is fairly cut and dry, and what might be hunting them is somewhat cut and dry, "Potentially post=apocalyptic" is a bit more open to interpretation. After all, if it was a zombie apocalypse, all your Zomtober models that you didn't get to still apply. A radioactive apocalypse could have mutants and all sorts of things, a "no fuel apocalypse" could see rabid gangs searching the desert for fuel.... what have you. Additionally, since *terrain is important*, working on suitably post-apocalyptic terrain pieces for your wargaming table works as well. So, this one's actually a fairly large range, and I can't wait to see everyone's offerings!

Additionally, it doesn't hurt that our club is ramping up for both a This Is Not a Test campaign and a Dark Age campaign, and just went heavy into Punkapocalyptic as well, so we've got a lot of PA dudes, dudettes, robots, and monsters to work on!

Good luck everyone, and here's hoping you can make it out of the month alive!!!

Well, the month has come to a close, and, as promised, here we are with a lineup of Hare Krishna zombies from the Studio Miniatures Z-Clipz range, ready for you to vote on to benefit charity. Everyone toiled hard on these lovlies, and I am pleased to report that we have a variety of lovely Hare Krishna zombies for you to choose from. With no communication at all, we each managed to make them look different without even converting the models- exactly the reasoning behind having everyone paint one- so we could have a group without them being redundant!

So, without further ado, here they are!

As promised, each Hare Krishna zombie is labelled with the charity of it's painter, so that you can choose by either paint job or Charity. They are presented to you in the same order they were when we announced the contest, which is, honestly, just the order in which people decided on their charities, so it's pretty random.
By the way, Studio Miniatures has not yet put these guys up for sale on their website. During the Kickstarter they were referred to as "FREE Kickstarter miniatures", so I'm not entirely sure if they were meant to be Kickstarter exclusive, or if they just haven't added them to their store yet- there are a lot of zombies from that kickstarter that are not yet in their store- they can't all be KS exclusives! So, enjoy for your now, and cross your fingers if you want your own!
So here they are, all together for the first time, like a little zombie family.

Zombie of the Month- October 2015- Mindless Zombies by Wyrd Miniatures

What's so great about these zombies? The Guys At Wyrd did a wonderful job making very generic zombies that aren't boring. At first glance they have a rather Plain Jane appearance, giving them a very versatile, Simple look that will not overpower the look of the rest of your Malifaux unit, or will blend in if placed in a larger horde. And then, when you look more closely, you can tell that each one of them has a unique story. This guy clearly worked at the railroad, that guy escaped from (or got into) somewhere he should not have been able to. Wyrd managed to make zombies that were at the same time both believable common citizens and also individually interesting. And there's a good variety in the set, without being too obvious about it. There's a female, a crawler, and a big guy (though not specifically a "fatty.") Great variety, great characters, great generic part-of-the-masses quality, all at once. Great job guys. The only thing these zombies won't do for you is be your center-stage guys. They are designed to be unimpressive, as they are "peons" in the rules of the Malifaux game.

The Basics:

Scale- 32mm. And yes, they are. They will definitely be among your taller human zombies if you have a 28mm horde. Makes them great to paint, though.

Genre- Pre-modern. They will look perfect in their intended Victorian setting, and passable in modern and medieval ones, as long as you don't draw attention to the barbed wire if you're going medieval.

Material- Plastic, which is a godsend on those arrows. That would look nowhere near as hot in metal. And that big hulking guy would be totally sockworthy.

Parts ‘N’ Bits- Come on, with as much assembly as is always required with Wyrd models, do you really want them putting EXTRA parts in there?

Assembly- Hey, only 29 pieces for 5 models? That's like an assembly holiday in Malifaux. They actually range from 3 pieces for the crawler to 9 for the hulk, though your real nightmare is going to be the girl pierced by arrows. Hope you don't have big, clunky fingers. However, it is worth noting that Wyrd did their normal, good job of designing their pieces so that you can tell how the pieces that stick out are supposed to fit on the model. All the arrows and tiny protrusions are attached to larger bases that make them easier to adhere while not disturbing the lines of the model. Like I said, despite the hard time we like giving Wyrd for using so many pieces, these guys really do a good job.

Bases- Standard Wyrd issue, 30mm lipped slotted bases included.
Period. Their Z-Brush artists deserve to have a career doing this, and we're glad they do.

Affordability- 2 brains out of 5- The box goes for an average of about $30. This is a little bit pricey for horde building, but honestly not bad for Malifaux force building. With 5 in the box (well, four and a half, but they take up 5 bases), that's a pretty good rate as far as Malifaux goes.
They might be a little tall if you are going 28mm, or a little unlikely if you are going modern or sci-fi, but honestly, I think they are at least excusable in almost any setting.
Wyrd is a really big company sold by a lot of people. You might even be lucky enough to find them in your local gaming store.
whichever way you are counting. It feels a little wierd having more than a week of Octoober left and putting up my final post for Zomtober, but that's the way the schedule worked out this year. More zombies might still happen as a matter of principle, but I guess I should take advantage of the opportunity to finish some other things that are due for all these commissios and contests I got myself into ::lol::. I need to plan better next year. Anyways, here they are, my last two official zombies for this Zomtober- well, the last two I can show you right now. I give you my word my zombie Hare Krishna is also done, but we don't want you to know which one belongs to whom until after the voting, so I'm not showing you right now. But for the record, that makes my personal official Zomtober total 9- two per week, plus a Hare Krishna. Oh, and one of those was on a 50mm base, to boot.

So here's candidate #1 today- the last of the Malifaux Mindless Zombies. I had to finish the set, after all. This guy must have almost escaped from somewhere, because he's all wrapped up in barbed wire, and is still holding one of the fence posts, while the other is impaled right through him. In retrospect, I should have used a bolder color scheme on this one, as the colors kinda blended together. I mean, using shiny new silver barbed wire wrapped around gray pants? What was I thinking? It barely shows up. Oh, well, no one's perfect. It's a cool character, anyhow. Next week, I'll ut them all together in their official Zombie of the Month article, so I don't skip a month, or leave the last week of October free of zombie writing.

Candidate #2 is a real mess if I ever saw one. I'm not kidding- look away and do not read on if you're squeamish. This model is actually "Jinx" from the Hell Dorado line, which has some really cool models in it. This poor fella never had a chance. Zombie baby is about the ugliest you can get, and I'm not even sure this was even truly a baby yet when the plague hit- yup, he's still got his umbilical cord. Aw, man, gross. He even has boils that I chose to color dark like buboes, because what could be worse that a zombie plague? A zombie Black Plague, of course! Anyways, I figured this guy clawed his way out of poor mom, either after she was a zombie, or maybe he would have been stillborn, except for that zombie...plague...thing...ew. Anyways, I figured, zombified placenta matter = nasty dark gooey colors. Yeah, I just said a whole bunch of words and phrases that should never be said, but hey, I warned you. Now there's a Zomtober finisher.

Well, there you have it. Another Zomtober, another dozen points off the painting board, and more citizens for good Zombalia to take part in next year's Zompacalypse. Stay tuned for this years Zompacalypse, coming soon! And get ready to vote in our zombie Hare Krishna contest! Fortunately I had just enough dexterity to grasp a brush, so I was still able to eek out a couple zombies. No, that misspelling was intentional; don't correct it.
She's a terrifying, twisted abomination of a once great heroine, taken by the Necroplane and turned into a horrible undead reflection of her former self. She is now known as Wonder Wight, and death befalls those who cross her path.
This is a new Pulp City character, from the big Supreme Edition Kickstarter last year. I was very excited to get her in our draft, and Zomtober was an excellent excuse to finally get to painting some of my Necroplane. Even though the game does not specifically mention zombies, it's pretty obvious that's the general idea they are getting at, since the forces of the Necroplane defeat heroes and then bring them back as villains.
I really wanted to bring out the comic book element in my Necroplane squad, so I chose a cliche Halloween color scheme, and used a rather flat style with sparing line highlights and dark shadows just in the deepest creases like outlines. By happy coincidence, the color scheme gave me the opportunity to do something else I thought would be cool- paint my zombies in the opposite of their living counterparts. Think about it- the green in her bodice and boots is the opposite of the un-Wonder Woman she clearly represents, the white hair the opposite of black (and a pun on wight), and the purple on the bracers and the top of the bodice reflects the yellow that would represent gold in a comic book. The fluorescent green, the only deviation from the comic book color scheme, will be the juice powering my Necroplane, hence its presence in her eyes and bubbling up from the void beneath. Those black rocks are the new Chaos base inserts from Micro Art Studio.
Up next we have Oni Sumo from Okko Miniatures, who will be serving as Killjoy for my Malifaux forces. The base colors and base choice used are a combination of the ones I used for my Nephilim, and those used in my Yan Lo team, so that it reflects my Neverborn, and is appropriate to serve with Yan Lo. The skintone looks a little different form the rest of my Nephilim because it's a little grayed out, to show his undeadness. It's not very gray, I know, but the original color is incredibly strong and dark. The base is a 50mm Secret Weapon Asian Garden 03 base. Again, Killjoy is not officially a zombie, but he is officially undead. And if you've ever seen the real Killjoy... you kinda hope he's a zombie, right? What other excuse does he have for being that ugly?
All right, that's all for this week. Stay tuned for the wrap-up next week. Expected guests? The last of the Malifaux zombies, a zombie baby, and maybe others!
I was able to finish two more zombies from the Malifaux Mindless Zombies set. These are both awesome characters- one obviously working the railroad or something and a girl that had a nasty run-in with an archer. I decided to start playing around with skintones. After all, what better time to experiment than on a couple of random zombies. And besides, Second Class Elitist loves layered washes and paint schemes, so I figured they'd go well with the Resurrectionist force he's making.

So, for the girl, I went with a mix of blue and skintone paints, washed over with a wash of equal parts Army Painter Green Tone and Strong Tone, for that fetid remains look.
The guy is using that obnoxiously pink Army Painter Barbarian Flesh, washed over with the Green Tone and THEN the Strong Tone, to give a two layered toning effect.

Stay tuned next week, when I promise you some Pulp City, and possibly a Malifaux Substitute. I'm almost done with the Mindless Zombies box, anyhow. Don't worry, they will all come back for their own Zombie of the month article.Ali Alcatrazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16821374518174842595noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2349132636052911887.post-47521083997703008392015-10-04T23:09:00.000-04:002015-10-04T23:09:09.153-04:00Ali's Zomtober Zombie #2!Ok, so, I didn't want to just do the minimum, so here's a second zombie for week 1. It is another from the Malifaux Mindless Zombies set. Obviously, I am hoping to finish the box this month (I have way too many Malifaux models on the board). Nice box. Nice basic zombies. More next week!

We picked her up during the Z-Clips Kickstarter, and she was a model I was really looking forward to painting this one up. Maybe it's just an extension of the "dead hookers of Malifaux" for me, but It was one I really wanted to do.

She's a model from z clips, based on Maggie from the walking dead. I really liked the character of the model, but couldn't find a reference with her wearing a tac vest and long sleeves. So I went with a combination of one of my favorite pictures of her and one with her wearing a tac vest.

March 22 has officially been deemed World Mime Day, in honor of legendary French mime artist Marcel Marceau. Of course, over here in zombie corner we prefer to celebrate someone's death day. Besides, what could be more appropriate for a mime than to celebrate his death? It is the ultimate expression of silence, after all. And so, in honor of the anniversary of Marcel Marceau's death on September 22, 2007, I bring you:

The Zombie of the Month- September 2015- Zombie Mime by Hasselfree Miniatures.

What’s so great about this zombie that he gets a whole month all to himself? Because, quite frankly, if you can't get a whole month's worth of entertainment out of a zombie mime, you're just not having enough fun with your zombie horde. The zombie mime is the ultimate zombie predator. Why? Because you never hear them coming. Think about it. You usually get some kind of warning- the typical zombie moan, the awkward shuffling of malformed feet. But the zombie mime retains his mime-performance instincts even in undeath. He is silent. He does not moan. He does not shuffle or trip. He moves with the grace and strength of someone who does not even need a real chair to be able to sit, even if he wanted to, which he doesn't have to now that he's a zombie. Your only prayer of escaping this ghastly menace is the hope that he will suddenly crash into an invisible wall while chasing you, thus giving you a head start.

See, I told you a zombie mime was a ton of fun. I wish there were a whole set of them. I would buy them. And stat them as elite zombies with incredible camouflage and blind spot rules to adjust for their silent approach. As it is, I will probably pick up a second of these guys to convert with a floppy, pom-pom adorned top hat and paint him to look like Bip the Clown, Mr. Marceau's famous mime character. I didn't go with that for this one because the hat didn't match, and with his pose, with that paint scheme, you'd barely recognize him as a mime.

The Basics:

Scale- It looks like he's on the short end of 28 mm, since his total height is only 29mm.

Genre- Although various forms of mime and pantomime are nearly as old as human civilization, the modern French variation most people think of as mimes, the silent figure with a white face, was developed in the early 19th century, which means you can use them in anything from roughly the Victorian era to the modern day. Yeah, this guy is so showing up in Malifaux at some point.

Material- Metal- so don't drop him, or you'll totally ruin his routine when he clanks on the floor.

Parts ‘N’ Bits- Really? You're looking for extra bits with your zombie mime? Yeah, they're there, you just can't see them ::rolls eyes::

Assembly- No assembly required.

Bases- 30mm lipped slotted base included.

Ratings:
Sculpt- 3 brains out of 5- There's nothing terribly wrong with the sculpt, but it's not great, either. But really, people are only going to be looking at how well you paint the horizontal black and white stripes, anyway, so this one's on you as to whether it looks good.

Affordability- 2 brains out of 5- I've seen this mini go for as much as $10, but it shouldn't take much work to find it around $7. Still pricey for a single model, but sometimes the rare gem is worth it. If you're still hedging, see if you can tack it on to a bigger order so you won't feel the impact of the shipping charges.

Value- 5 brains out of 5- If a zombie mime is not an absolute must for your zombie horde, I feel sorry for you. Life clearly just does not hold enough magic for you.

Availability- 4 brains out of 5- Hasselfree Miniatures is a big company with a lot of distributors, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one.

Pros: They call high blood pressure the Silent Killer. I say it's this guy. For a mere $7 plus shipping you get to add one of the most terrifying zombies in all the apocalypse to your zombie horde, and good in multiple genres to boot. Who doesn't want that?

Cons: There's only one sculpt out there, so you can't have a squad of zombie mimes. Pitty.

Good evening everyone. Ali is a bit busy making new friends this month, so I stepped in to try to raise up an article for her. Our zombie of the Month this time around is a part two of an eventual four parter starring the Lovely Dead Ladies of Malifaux. This one is the Rotten Belles edition.

Why is this a four parter, you ask? Well, these happen to be a pair of the original white metal Rotten Belles, recently replaced with Malifaux's incredibly detailed (read: multi-pieced) plastic kits. I still have these lovely ladies of the metal nights laying around needing some paint, and since my Red Chapel list intends to have a brothel full, it just makes sense to field both the plastic and metal ones for some variety. Not that I'm scoring any 6MMRPC points with these, since I still never got around to the rest of the box, but it's a start, right? Ali already gave us a look at the Dead Doxies in their original metal form, and is very keen on the recently announced plastic kit. So... there's your four part harmony of dead hookers.

Ali covered all the things that make dead hookers wonderful models back in February, so go look that up. As for these two... well, even in metal there was something special about this box. I really liked the way the figured could be painted to be coyly trying to hide their undead state if you wanted, and the dresses and parasols had a ton of period detailing in them.

My brushwork isn't quite up to AA's standards, but I'm pretty pleased with how they came together. At least, that was, until I couldn't find what I did with the parasol pieces. Enjoy my lack of organization and I'll swap out the pictures later this week. You will also notice these models are both standing at lamp posts. For consideration of gameplay for my opponent, all my Rotten Belle models are "lamped", while my Dead Doxies are not.... there's very little to tell the models apart if you're unfamiliar with the faction, so it's a nice method of separation.

The Basics:

Scale- Scale is kind of an inside joke in Malifaux.... originally billed as 28mm, the models drift a bit even in the metals, and far worse in the new allegedly 32mm scale plastics. And these girls are not dinky even for that scale, measuring 35mm to top of the head.

Genre- Victorian- the best genre for that zombie hooker effect

Material- White metal. Not my favorite.... but my favorite for "previously owned" models as these were, because stripping them is easier.

Although, I suggest replacing the parasol arms with rod to keep them straight.

Assembly- Most of them were one pieced, with the parasols (and sometimes attached had) being a second piece.

Bases- The 30mm lipped variety, so popular in skirmish gaming these days.

Sure, there's some nicer models on the market these days (including their replacements), but there's some really good character involved in these, and the sculpting was really solid for it's time. So I'm leaving this affordability really low, under the assumption that you will need to spend at least that, if you can find someone willing to part with them, and that's if no one else bidding on Ebay wants them more than that.
They are, however, wonderful to look at, and have great personalities. If you are building a collection of great characters, or a themed horde that they match, this will, of course, be higher.

Fortunately, any Red Chapel leftover metal box or second hand auction is going to include them, so you can generally find them so long as you don't mind picking up other models with them (I personally really like the metal Seamus and Copycat killer models, so extras aren't a problem. Besides, you should have four or five of the dapper gentleman in different suits. The clothes make the man after all.)
